Talking sustainability at school

This week The Changineer was at Mackie Academy’s S1 Sustainability Fair, talking to approximately 150 first year pupils (not all at the same time)!

The Academy had asked a variety of charities, community groups and businesses to be part of this learning journey, so I was there with familiar faces from NESCAN, One Seed Forward, Paws on Plastic and Repair What You Wear to name a few.

The students were intrigued to see my oil droplet from the North Sea, which is a great reminder to me of the transition I have made from the fossil fuel industry to promoting sustainability & regenerative leadership.  We spoke about the amazing resource fossil fuels are and how we (in Scotland) take for granted how it contributes to our daily lives, through transport, energy systems, what we buy and sell and our expectations.  I touched on nature and how we are nature, its not a separate thing that we (humans) have the right to dominate and that when we connect with our enjoyment of the natural world we are motivated to protect it.

Empowering the students to realize we all have the power of influence in our families, schools, our communities, our workplaces and the ripples (of influence) we create are important, lets use it to steer towards a sustainable future.

What would your business answer if a student asked: What positive impact is your business making in the local community?  or How is it supporting a more sustainable future?
